Reflexology

Reflexology is an ancient therapy involving the application of pressure to points on the feet with the principle that – similar to acupuncture – each pressure point on the sole or sides of the foot corresponds to a particular function or part of the body.

This is a complementary therapy to help reduce symptoms and improve someone’s quality of life, much like massage.

When pressure is applied to these specific points the corresponding part of the body is stimulated to improve its functioning and to get rid of toxins, allowing the body to heal itself.

Reflexologists use foot charts to guide them as they apply pressure to specific areas and is sometimes combined with other hands-on therapies which may be offered by chiropractors and physical therapists, among others.

Several studies indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as stress and anxiety, and enhance relaxation and sleep and is regarded as complementary medicine.

The theory of Reflexology is based on the ancient Chinese belief in qi (pronounced “chee”), or “vital energy which flows through each person. When a person feels stressed or goes through some trauma, their body blocks qi.

This can cause an imbalance in the body that leads to illness.  Through reflexology points the energy, qi, is directed through the body until it reaches the area in need of healing.

A reflexology session may also help to calm the central nervous system, as nerves connect the skin and internal organs promoting relaxation and other benefits just like any form of massage.

Reflexology is linked to many potential benefits: reduce stress and anxiety:
