Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional freedom technique (EFT) is an alternative healing therapy for anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), physical pain and emotional distress. It’s also referred to as tapping or psychological acupressure.  It can also be used to release negative beliefs.

The tapping on different parts of the body helps balance energy and reduce physical and emotional pain. People can see an EFT practitioner for treatment or treat themselves using this technique.

Similar to acupuncture, EFT focuses on the meridian points — or energy hot spots — to restore balance to your body’s energy that may be blocked. Based on Chinese medicine, meridian points are thought of as areas of the body energy flows through. These pathways help balance energy flow to maintain your health. Any imbalance can influence disease or sickness.

Acupuncture uses needles to apply pressure to these energy points. EFT uses fingertip tapping to apply pressure and ultimately restore balance by tapping specific points on the body, primarily on the head and the face, in a particular sequence. While doing this, the person focuses on the issue that they wish to treat.

When these blockages are released, the problem feeling can be released and move through the body. Several rounds of the tapping can be done until the recipient feels the issue abated. New, more positive beliefs about themselves can then emerge.

In spiritual Kinesiology EFT is used to release the negative beliefs a patient may have which is causing their issue.   In this case the Kinesiologist checks with the body which EFT tapping points to use to release the issue.

I once used Kinesiology and EFT to release a patient’s belief that they could not fall pregnant even though they were physically healthy.  The patient fell pregnant within the month.

What does EFT treat?  It can be used to manage both psychological problems and physical pain. For example, tapping is used to help cope with conditions such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Fear of public speaking and other forms of social anxieties/fear
  • Fatigue and boosting energy levels
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Short-term or chronic stress
  • Tension headaches
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Muscular tension and joint pain
  • Food cravings and emotional eating
  • Emotional problems tied to low self-esteem
  • Difficulties with athletic performance, focus and coordination
  • Trouble sleeping
