Massage Therapy

Yes! Massage therapy is an AHT.

Massage is generally used to induce relaxation and as relief from sore muscles but the benefits on the mind should not be discounted as massage is highly beneficial in reducing the effects of stress, anxiety, or depression.

The history of massage therapy dates back to 3000 BCE (or earlier) in India, where it was considered a sacred system of natural healing. Used by Hindus in Ayurveda “life health” medicine, massage therapy was a practice passed down through generations to heal injuries, relieve pain, and prevent and cure illnesses.

Massage therapy involves the manipulation of the soft tissue in the body, usually after applying oils, which may or may not be scented.

My best massage was one where the therapist used peppermint and rosemary essential oil – this was a crystal massage. A Crystal massage is something I would definitely recommend!

Massage therapy is also beneficial just for the comfort and relaxation it brings to one’s body and is a regular self-care routine addition, a person could adopt. It is best known for treating neck and back pain, especially for those who spend long hours working at a computer keyboard and is one of the best ways to prevent the onset of stress-related illnesses or injury from sport and exercise.

Generally considered part of integrative medicine and not a substitute for mainstream medical treatment, it is excellent for treating a range of conditions like:

  • Reducing stress and increasing relaxation
  • Reducing pain and muscle soreness and tension
  • Improving circulation, energy, and alertness
  • Lowering heart rate and blood pressure
  • Improving immune function
  • Elimination of Toxins
Massage is also good to assist with these disorders:
  • Anxiety
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Digestive disorders
  • Nerve pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Headaches
  • Sports injuries
  • Insomnia related to stress
  • Temporomandibular joint pain
Interesting Fact - Have you heard of a Marma Massage?

The Ayurvedic Marma massage consists of pressure and stimulation of marma points all over the body and major dynamic, draining and enveloping manoeuvres (smoothing, kneading) with hot oil.

The purpose of this massage is to re-balance these points and energy centres to prevent diseases and treat imbalances (related to stress, acute emotions, poor lifestyle, etc.) while bringing a lot of psychological and muscular relaxation. A powerful treatment to harmonize body and mind.
